Cefeidas Group’s Manager of Public Policy, Risk & Strategy, Martín Planes, was featured in the Latin America Advisor of the Inter-American Dialogue, commenting on the Argentine government’s proposed reform of the Central Bank’s charter.
Planes highlighted the proposal as a significant step toward fulfilling President Javier Milei’s campaign promise to “shut down” the Central Bank, particularly by restricting monetary financing of the Treasury and limiting certain government bond purchases.
According to Planes, the reform could strengthen monetary autonomy and help anchor inflation expectations, while also reinforcing fiscal discipline by requiring the government to address fiscal gaps through spending cuts, higher revenues, borrowing, or a combination of these measures.
He also noted that congressional approval would strengthen the credibility of Argentina’s stabilization program by institutionalizing key principles of Milei’s economic agenda. The bill has already received committee approval in the Chamber of Deputies and is scheduled to be debated on the floor on August 26.
Planes emphasized, however, that securing approval in both chambers of Congress will remain the main challenge, requiring the government to negotiate with allied parties and provincial governors.
