On May 17, our Managing Director, Juan Cruz Díaz, and Senior Analyst, Santiago Ott, published an article on the German-Italian news platform SALTO, analyzing Javier Milei’s rise to power in Argentina, as well as the similarities and differences between his movement and the broader “new right” phenomenon worldwide.
Díaz and Ott emphasize that Milei’s swift ascent was enabled by a unique mix of political fragmentation, economic turmoil, and a growing public demand for anti-establishment leadership. His rise, they argue, was driven by a radical pro-market agenda and a disruptive communication style that resonated particularly with younger voters disenchanted with traditional political forces.
The authors also examine the degree to which Milei aligns with the global “new right” movement. While his cultural positions and political methods might initially place him alongside figures like Donald Trump or Jair Bolsonaro, his steadfast commitment to free markets and minimal state intervention distinguishes him from many of his international peers. This makes Milei, in many respects, a sui generis case—challenging the notion of the Western “new right” as a uniform or monolithic trend.
