Why Is Argentina’s President Bowing Out of the Election?

On May 10, Latin America Advisor published a commentary by Cefeidas Group’s Managing Director, Juan Cruz Díaz, and Senior Analyst Santiago Ott. In the article, they pointed out that although Alberto Fernandez’s decision not to run for a second term leaves the way relatively open to new contenders, the incentives seem to be in place for the FdT to close ranks behind a single candidate, which would allow the ruling coalition to unify votes in the primaries and improve the FdT’s prospects for the October general elections.
