What Do Mexican Politics Mean for Latin America?

On June 23rd, Managing Director Juan Cruz Díaz joined Chatham House Latin America senior fellow Chistopher Sabatini for a webinar titled “Mexico’s politics and economy: will South America also turn left?”. Strategic Insight Group and Menas Associates co-hosted the talk, which revolved around the domestic and regional implications of Mexico’s current political landscape. Both speakers pushed back against assessments that Mexico–along with Latin America more generally–is undergoing a leftward shift. Instead, they argued, both Mexico and the region are swaying towards anti-establishment candidates who, at least currently, happen to be leftists. Additionally, Díaz and Sabatini outlined the potential benefits Mexico stands to gain from nearshoring and highlighted policy roadblocks to regional development.
